Faringdon's folly tower was the last major folly to be built in England. It peeks over the Scots Pine woodland which was originally planted in the eighteenth century by Henry James Pye, poet Laureate to King George III. The story goes that the nursery rhyme "Sing a Song of Sixpence" was written to ridicule the poet's flowery poems dedicated to the King. From the top of Baron Berner's tower in Faringdon, you can see five counties. But even from the edge of the wood, the views across the Vale, west towards Gloucestershire and east to Oxford are wonderful, a spot to take stock while the local children hunt for giraffes.
